Scottish Country Dancing in New Jersey
RSCDS Groups in New Jersey
|
-
- Four groups in New Jersey conduct weekly dances and classes:
- Tenafly, fifteen minutes from the George Washington bridge in Bergen County, conducts intermediate and beginner classes on Tuesday nights, followed by tea and social dancing.
- Fanwood, in the southwestern suburbs of New York City in Union County, holds social dances on Tuesday nights.
- Hightstown, in central NJ, holds mixed classes on Monday. Instruction is adjusted for the needs of the members of the group.
- Cherry Hill, a few minutes outside of Philadelphia, meets on Wednesday nights and also holds mixed level classes. And there is tea, of course!

- IF YOU'RE A BEGINNER
- All four NJ groups are happy to accomodate beginners. It is customary to switch partners at the end of each dance, so while couples are welcome, it's no problem if you come alone. Everyone gets to dance.
The classic Scottish dancing shoe is the ghillie, but ballet slippers or any soft, flexible shoe will do. Women are encouraged to wear skirts and men may wear the kilt if they like, but slacks are fine for both sexes. During classes, the main thing is to be comfortable. People dress more formally for the larger dances.
